Central Florida’s Unemployment Rate At 15.1% for July 2020, 3.8 Percentage Point Higher than the State


Orlando, Fla.,– The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 15.1% in July 2020, which was higher than the state’s rate of 11.3%. This rate was 11.8 percentage point higher than the region’s rate of 3.3% during the same timeframe last year. The labor force was 1,384,716 down 21,624 (-1.5) over the year. There were 209,720 unemployed residents in the region.

Unemployment Rates

Central Florida’s Lowest Unemployment Rates:

  • Sumter County had the lowest unemployment rate (10.0%) in the CSCF region followed by Seminole County (10.5%), Lake County (12.4%), Orange County (16.1%), and Osceola County (20.2%).

Job Growth Trends

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 1,196,600, a decrease of 117,600 Jobs
    (-8.9%) Over the Year.
  • Industries losing jobs over the year were:
    • Leisure and Hospitality (-83,000 Jobs)
    • Professional Businesses and Services (-11,400 Jobs)
    • Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (-7,700 Jobs)
    • Education and Health Services (-3,400 Jobs)
    • Government (-3,200 Jobs)
    • Financial Activities (-1,800 Jobs)
    • Mining, Logging and Construction (-1,600 Jobs)
    • Information (-1,500 Jobs)
    • Manufacturing (-600 Jobs)

The Villages MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 30,900, an increase of 300 Jobs (+1.0%) Over the Year
