Central Florida’s Unemployment Rate At 8.0% for October 2020, 1.5 Percentage Point Higher than the State


Orlando, Fla.,– The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 8.0% in October 2020, which was higher than the state’s rate of 6.5%. This rate was 5.2 percentage point higher than the region’s rate of 2.8% during the same timeframe last year. The labor force was 1,348,162 down 64,835 (-4.6) over the year. There were 107,633 unemployed residents in the region.

Unemployment Rates

Central Florida’s Lowest Unemployment Rates:

  • Seminole County had the lowest unemployment rate (5.7%) in the CSCF region followed by Sumter County (5.8%), Lake County (6.5%), Orange County (8.5%), and Osceola County (10.4%).

Job Growth Trends

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 1,212,500, a decrease of 124,900 Jobs (-9.3%) over the year.
  • Industries losing jobs over the year were:
    • Leisure and Hospitality (-85,500 Jobs)
    • Government (-8,700 Jobs)
    • Professional Businesses and Services (-8,100 Jobs)
    • Education and Health Services (-7,000 Jobs)
    • Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (-5,800 Jobs)
    • Mining, Logging, and Construction (-3,000)
    • Financial Activities (-1,900 Jobs)
    • Information (-1,200 Jobs)
    • Manufacturing (-600 Jobs)

The Villages MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 32,400, an increase of 200 Jobs (+0.6%) over the year
