Central Florida’s Unemployment Rate At 16.1% for April 2020, 3.2 Percentage Point Higher than the State


Orlando, Fla.,– The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 16.1% in March 2020, which was higher than the state’s rate of 12.9%. This rate was 13.3 percentage point higher than the region’s rate of 2.8% during the same timeframe last year. The labor force was 1,280,151 down 94,556 (-6.9) over the year. There were 206,381 unemployed residents in the region.

Unemployment Rates

Central Florida’s Lowest Unemployment Rates:

  • Sumter County had the lowest unemployment rate (12.3%) in the CSCF region followed by Seminole County (13.1%), Lake County (14.7%), Orange County (16.5%), and Osceola County (4.5%).

Job Growth Trends

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA:

  • Nonagricultural was 1,146,700, an increase of 181,000 Jobs (-13.6%) Over the Year.

  • Mining, Logging, and Construction (+500 Jobs)
  • Industries losing jobs over the year were:
    • Leisure and Hospitality (-113,100 Jobs)
    • Professional Businesses and Services (-19,900 Jobs)

    • Education and Health Services (-14,800 Jobs)
    • Financial Activities (-4,900 Jobs)
    • Manufacturing (-2,900 Jobs)
    • Government (-1,900 Jobs)
    • Information (-1,300 Jobs)

The Villages MSA:

  • Nonagricultural Employment was 30,000, an increase of 2,100 Jobs (-6.5%) Over the Year
