Central Florida’s Unemployment Rate At 22.4% for May 2020, 7.9 Percentage Point Higher than the State


Orlando, Fla.,– The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 22.4% in May 2020, which was higher than the state’s rate of 14.5%. This rate was 19.5 percentage point higher than the region’s rate of 2.9% during the same timeframe last year. The labor force was 1,359,481 down 28,446 (-2.0) over the year. There were 304,757 unemployed residents in the region.

Unemployment Rates

Central Florida’s Lowest Unemployment Rates:

  • Sumter County had the lowest unemployment rate (12.9%) in the CSCF region followed by Seminole County (14.5%), Lake County (20.6%), Orange County (23.2%), and Osceola County (31.1%).

Job Growth Trends

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 1,109,700, a decrease of 217,000 Jobs (-16.4%) Over the Year.

The Villages MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 31,500, a decrease of 500 Jobs (-1.6%) Over the Year
