Central Florida’s Unemployment Rate At 9.7% for September 2020, 2.1 Percentage Point Higher than the State


Orlando, Fla.,– The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Central Florida (CSCF) region (Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties) was 9.7% in September 2020, which was higher than the state’s rate of 7.6%. This rate was 6.9 percentage point higher than the region’s rate of 2.8% during the same timeframe last year. The labor force was 1,360,911 down 53,556 (-3.8) over the year. There were 132,179 unemployed residents in the region.

 

Unemployment Rates

Central Florida’s Lowest Unemployment Rates:

  • Sumter County had the lowest unemployment rate (6.0%) in the CSCF region followed by Seminole County (6.4%), Lake County (7.9%), Orange County (10.4%), and Osceola County (13.3%).

Job Growth Trends

Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 1,198,700, a decrease of 126,500 Jobs (-9.5%) over the year.
  • Industries losing jobs over the year were:
    • Leisure and Hospitality (-89,200 Jobs)
    • Professional Businesses and Services (-7,500 Jobs)
    • Government (-7,300 Jobs)
    • Education and Health Services (-6,700 Jobs)
    • Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (-4,800 Jobs)
    • Mining, Logging, and Construction (-3,400)
    • Information (-1,300 Jobs)
    • Financial Activities (-900 Jobs)
    • Manufacturing (-500 Jobs)

The Villages MSA:

  • Nonagricultural employment was 31,900, an increase of 200 Jobs (-1.6%) over the year
